House Heat

House Heat

The thermostats on the walls are covered because the electric baseboards are not in use. The heat for the house is provided through the heating units mounted on the walls. There is one on the upper main level and one in each bedroom on the middle and lower levels. Each of those units has a separate remote control.

In order for the middle and lower levels to heat evenly, keep the doors to the bedrooms open so the middle areas of those levels receive heat. At night or when you close the doors to the bedrooms, you may want to lower the temperature as the rooms will become very warm. The middle areas of the second and lowest levels will take longer to warm up, but if they are still too cool after a few hours simply increase the set temperature of the bedroom HVAC remotes and increase the fan speed.

Control of the heating system (HVAC) using the remote control

1. The HVAC remote control should already be turned on, but if not press and release the orange OFF/ON button.

2. The HVAC system should always be in the HEAT mode, which is indicated by the small Sunshine icon (shown below) in the top part of the HVAC remote control display.

Sunshine icon: ☀️

3. Adjust the temperature setting (TEMP) by pressing and releasing the (+) button to raise the temperature or the (-) button to lower the temperature.

4. To adjust the FAN speed, slide the front cover of the HVAC remote down to expose the top row of black buttons. Press and release the FAN button to change the FAN speed to the desired setting.

Press [FAN] to select fan speed. Each press changes fan speed in the following order:

(AUTO)(Silent)(Low)(Med.)(High)(Super High)

Other settings: Please change only the TEMP setting and the FAN speed.

Troubleshooting

If the HVAC unit is not providing heat, please confirm that the system is in the HEAT mode (step 2 above). If the HVAC is not in the HEAT mode, slide the cover of the HVAC remote down to expose the top row of black buttons. Push and release the MODE button (middle) until the HEAT (sunshine) icon is displayed.

Kitchen Cooktop

Kitchen Instructions and Helpful Tips

The Cooktop

This is an induction cooktop. An induction cooktop looks the same as an electric cooktop, but it heats with induction heating instead of electric coils. That means that the heat passes through an induction coil, creating an electromagnetic field. You’ll see that the pots and pans have a copper ring around the bottom and when you have the burner turned on and a pot on the cooktop, you hear a whirring sound.

When the cookware is placed on the induction burner, electromagnetic energy will cause just the cooking pan to heat up, meaning only the areas where cookware is placed may get hot. If you touch the cooking zone while it is on, it will not be hot and you won’t get burned (though it’s likely there will be residual heat where the cookware was placed, so please be careful around the cooktop).

induction cooktops are much faster than traditional gas or electric. Please note that the kitchen cookware is not nonstick and you should cook at lower temperature settings than you would normally use. :)

Cooking

Induction cooktops heat food quickly. Press “ON” for the burner, and the default setting will be 5. Settings range from 1-9 and H (high). Setting H will boil water in about 90 seconds.

The pots and pans are not non-stick. Use non-stick spray or butter. If food sticks, add a little water and boil for a minute before washing. This loosens food and prevents the need for abrasive cleaners.

Cook on lower settings to avoid burning food. For example, eggs cook well on a setting of 5.

Using the Oven

Turn the left knob to Bake or Convection Bake (Conv Bake) and the right knob to the desired temperature.

A red light indicates heating and will turn off when the oven reaches the set temperature.

Cleaning

The cooktop surface can be cleaned with either a damp sponge or sprayed with a multi-purpose cleaner and wiped down. Please do not use anything scratchy (like a scouring pad or steel wool) because the glass top will scratch and damage the surface.

Wood-burning Fireplace

*Only operable during (Nov-March)

Safety Guidelines:

Inspect the fireplace: Before using the fireplace, visually inspect the firebox, grate, and flue for any signs of damage or obstructions. If you notice any issues, please notify the property owner before using the fireplace.

Open the flue: Ensure that the flue is fully open before starting a fire to allow proper ventilation and prevent smoke from entering the living area.

Use the right materials: Use only seasoned hardwood logs for burning, and avoid using green wood, paper, or flammable liquids, as they can produce excessive smoke, creosote buildup, or cause a chimney fire.

Building the fire: Place the logs on the grate, leaving space between them for proper airflow. Use kindling or fire starters to ignite the fire, and then gradually add logs as needed.

Keep a safe distance: Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance between the fireplace and any furniture, decor, or flammable materials.

Supervision: Never leave a fire unattended, and ensure that there is always an adult present while the fireplace is in use.

Use fireplace tools: Utilize the provided fireplace tools, such as a poker or tongs, when adjusting the logs or tending to the fire to avoid burns or injuries.

Extinguish the fire: Allow the fire to burn down naturally, and avoid using water to extinguish it, as this can cause thermal shock to the fireplace components.

Remove ashes: Once the fire is out and the embers are cool, use a fireplace shovel to remove the ashes, placing them in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid.

By following these basic safety guidelines, you can enjoy the warmth and ambiance of the wood-burning fireplace while minimizing risks and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.

BBQ Grill

Pre-Grilling Preparations

• Open the Lid: Always start with the grill lid open to prevent gas buildup.

Clean the Grates: Remove any residue from previous use with a grill brush.

Lighting the Grill

• Open the Propane Valve: Turn the propane tank valve counterclockwise to open.

Set Burners to Ignite: Turn the first burner knob to the “Ignite” or “High” position.

Ignite the Grill: Press the ignition button. If it doesn’t light within a few seconds, turn off the gas and wait a few minutes before retrying.

Light Additional Burners: If using more burners, light them after the first one is ignited.

Preheating

• Close the Lid: After lighting, close the lid to allow the grill to preheat.

Wait: Preheat for about 10-15 minutes until the grill reaches the desired temperature.

Cooking

• Adjust Temperature: Set burners to the appropriate heat levels for your cooking method (direct or indirect grilling).

Place Food on Grill: Use tongs or a spatula to position food on the grates.

Monitor Cooking: Keep an eye on the food, flipping or rotating as needed.

Check Doneness: Use a meat thermometer to ensure foods reach safe internal temperatures.

Shutting Down the Grill

• Turn Off Burners: Set all burner knobs to the “Off” position.

Close Propane Valve: Turn the propane tank valve clockwise to close.

Let Grill Cool: Allow the grill to cool down with the lid open or closed, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Post-Grilling Maintenance

• Clean Grates: After the grill has cooled slightly but is still warm, brush the grates to remove any remaining food particles.

Empty Grease Tray: Dispose of grease properly to prevent flare-ups next time.

Cover the Grill: Once completely cool, place a grill cover over it to protect from the elements.

Storage

• Secure Propane Tank: Ensure the propane tank valve is closed tightly.

Getting Around

You'll want your own car here — the home, dining, hiking, the spa, and Discovery Ridge are all a short drive, and the mountain roads are winding (take it slow in snow or ice).

No Uber or Lyft — Nelson County is rural and rideshare doesn't operate out here, and cell service is spotty in places, so don't count on hailing a ride.

The resort shuttle runs during ski season only. For a Route 151 brewery/winery crawl, golf at Stoney Creek, or any group outing where nobody wants to drive, book a private shuttle or car service ahead (2–3 weeks out for weekends). See Corporate Car Service of Virginia in Explore, or search for a local wine-tour shuttle.

Lift tickets & ski/snowboard rentals are at the base near The Edge — pre-purchase online to skip the window queue. Snow tubing at The Plunge needs a separate ticket.

Groceries, Gas & Essentials

Gas: The Market in the resort village is the only gas station on the mountain — otherwise the nearest gas is in Nellysford (~20 min down). Top off before you head back up.

Quick needs: The Market covers the basics — deli sandwiches, a pizza counter, grocery staples, Virginia-made products, beer & wine — convenient but small.

A real grocery run: Nellysford Market (~15 min, limited selection), Food Lion in Lovingston (~25 min), or Walmart + Kroger in Waynesboro (~30 min, easy from I-64).

Staying connected: cell service is unreliable on parts of the mountain — the home's WiFi is your dependable connection, and the Mountain Inn has free public WiFi in a pinch.

Medical: urgent care in Lovingston (~25 min); the nearest ER is UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville (~45 min). Call 911 for any emergency.
